The 90s are so last decade. Today we look back at an infamous moment in cycling shoe advertising. Hold on tight!
In 1994, Carnac shoes used longtime Tour de France mountain classification champ Richard Virenque and Luc LeBlanc to sell the road shoe line in the United States. In those days this sort of Euro-snobbery was chic and Americans ate anything French – including dopers. Unfortunately for Carnac, both riders were involved in doping scandals in following years forcing Leblanc to retire. Since 2005 Richard Virenque has been a consultant commentator for Eurosport and makes TV drink commercials alongside young female models.
